Get rid of official, says playwright

YET another row has erupted at the troubled Windybrow Theatre in Hillbrow.

This time famous playwright Martin Kuboekae is calling on the Department of Arts and Culture to fire chief executive Vuyo Maphela, pictured.

Koboekae, who said he was gatvol with the way Windybrow was run, submitted a dossier with complaints from 10 artists to the Department of Arts and Culture in Pretoria on Monday.

Koboekae told Sowetan he wanted the department to fire Maphela because he was inefficient. His anger was provoked when his show, Last Pro in Yeoville, did not open as scheduled last week.

Koboekae said: "Windybrow has no respect for artists. Last week they could not open my show because the theatre was incomplete since it's under renovation. Four days before the opening the roof of the theatre had holes in it and there was no ceiling."

"Despite the R122,000 that I have paid Windybrow for the production, they failed to market my show. There are no posters and banners in the streets."

Maphela said in response: "It is not true that I am never in the office. You will appreciate that some of the CEO functions have to be performed out of office.

"I believe I am doing an excellent job. The Windybrow's audited annual reports will attest to my statement."
