A Big Break for an idea - R5m prize up for grabs

A NEW reality series for entrepreneurs will hit South African TV screens at the beginning of next year

The producers say 12 contestants will compete for a R5 million investment prize when The Big Break reality show starts on the small screen.

The Big Break, which is the equivalent of the popular show The Apprentice, will see contestants compete against each other's ideas for the investment prize.

Founder of the show Ezra Ndwandwe said this was not just a reality show but a way for the contestants to enrich their businesses and their communities.

"It is a platform to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among South Africans by educating viewers while entertaining at the same time," he said.

Ndwandwe said thousands had show up to audition for the show but only 12 made it through the tough selection process.

"We did not want ordinary business ideas like catering companies or recruitment agencies.

"We want unique business ideas that have the potential to grow and enrich not only the businesspeople themselves but the country," Ndwandwe said.

The business ideas of the 12 finalists range from growing organic plants to newspapers and to affordable medical aid for waitrons.

Environmental and social entrepreneur Sean Hide said he was excited to be one of the 12 finalists and was confident he would do his best to win the R5million.

"I've been in this business for about three years. It is an ideal way to get people to take care of the environment," Hide said.

The judges are chancellor of the University of Johannesburg Wendy Luhabe, Business Report editor Ellis Mnyandu and entrepreneur Dr Werner Barkhuizen.

Aspirants came from across the business spectrum to showcase their ideas and tell why they think they are the next Donald Trump, Richard Branson or Mark Shuttleworth.

The eagerly awaited The Big Break starts airing on SABC3 on February 2.
