Food can cause allergies

DEPENDING on the country or region, people eat different foods, their local cuisine

The diets depend on a range of factors, including religion, economic and social issues, food safety and the availability of foods.

In the Middle East, hummus is a favourite, while in Japan raw fish, such as in sushi, is popular. The French are known for their delicious cheeses and tortillas are enjoyed in Mexico.

People need food to survive, but sometimes it can lead to sickness. About 70 million people each year suffer from food poisoning and about 10percent of those cases are fatal. Food can also cause problems in people who have food allergies; about 8percent of children and 2percent of adults have some food allergy - the body's immune system reacts to the food as though it is harmful and attacks it. Common allergies include peanuts, gluten and shellfish.
