Bantwini strikes gold with latest CD

ZAKES Bantwini, the artist credited with the evolution of kwaito in Durban, has defied low record sales and piracy to dig gold with his latest album.

Universal Music, his recording company, confirmed to Sowetan this week that the record label owner and award-winning artist has sold 20000 - a benchmark for gold in the local music scene - of his award-winning album Love, Light and Music, making him one of the few local artists to achieve this feat.

Hit by low CD sales and compounded by new avenues for accessing music such as the Internet and almost out-of-control piracy, many a local musician struggles to strike gold with their talent.

Bantwini is credited with discovering kwaito sensation L'vovo Derrango and owns independent record label Mayonie Productions.

Armed with a diploma in jazz and popular music, he is currently studying towards a degree with the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He studied at Natal Technikon, now known as Durban University of Technology.

Meanwhile, Professor of Jezebel fame has reached platinum with his album of the same name.
