Exploring violence through art

BUDDING visual artist Thomas Moremi is launching his professional career on a high note. Moremi's works, which tackle critical issues such as violence in schools, shone during the exhibition at Funda Centre Gallery last month.

The young artist, who comes from Zone 4 in Diepkloof, Soweto, was part of the centre's group exhibition.

In his work he engages art viewers about violence in a place that is presumed to be safe.

Like all conceptual artists his ideas in the work take charge over traditional aesthetic. Then his works become more abstract, especially for people who are not familiar with the style.

His interaction and engagement with the subject is impressive.

Most of his subjects are intended to stimulate a dialogue that encourages an understanding of the conditions and underlying principles behind violence.

"I decided to focus on violence in schools because I am opening a dialogue," Moremi said.

"Firstly, schools are regarded as safe. But pupils st ab and shoot one other at schools, while young girls get raped."

Moremi plans to continue exploring the issue of violence. He says his love of art started at a young age after seeing his uncle Hosiah Masokameng doing a painting. Masokameng, who has passed away, was one of the extremely talented local visual artists.

"My passion started with drawings and when I saw my uncle's work the interest for this craft grew. He was very supportive – that is why I chose art as a professional career."

Art does not generate a monthly income like other professions, and Moremi says he is very much aware of that.

"As a young person doing art you find yourself under pressure because your peers have cars and make progress in life.

"But I can handle that because my priorities are different. I want to build my brand as an artist and money will follow later."
