Success grounds her to Soweto

THE most likely place to find successful Afro-pop musician Winnie Khumalo at her Protea Glen, Soweto, house is either the kitchen or the bedroom.

Khumalo is currently enjoying success with the release of her second album entitled Woman.

"My favourite place in the house is the bedroom and the kitchen. The bedroom because I love sleeping and the kitchen because I love cooking. Well, really? Anyway, we did not probe deeper about the bedroom "just for sleeping"!

Khumalo, who has assumed another life in the industry after episodes defined by struggling to launch herself from the 1980s to the 1990s, said the choice of Soweto for her home was deliberate.

"I did not want to buy anywhere besides Soweto. I wanted to live among ordinary people. There is no reason to leave Soweto and buy elsewhere once one is successful. In fact, Soweto is as good as any other place in the country, perfect for myself and my two children Ntando and Rethabile," she says.

Khumalo says that she bought the house last year after her successful album, I Live My Life, which achieved gold status and relaunched her career. She became a huge success, with the title track becoming a must-have party song across the country.

She also got gigs left, right and centre, which further cemented her foothold on the music scene.

On Sunday, November 28, Khumalo will launch her follow-up album, Woman, at Tsalanang Pub at Braamfisherville, where top musicians, including Professor, Oskido, Thebe, Arthur, Kwela Tebza, Deep Level and Mono T, will perform at the launch party called Winnie Khumalo Kalawa Release Party.

Two of the songs on this 12-track album, Woman and Impilo are played consistently on leading national radio stations. Khumalo wrote all the songs.

"On this album, I am more mature, dealing with personal issues I've experienced. For example, Woman is about those women who you tell your deep secrets to in confidence and they gossip about you about those very things to other people.

"I am saying they must stop that and not betray the trust that those in pain and desperation have in them," she says.
