Sungura star Macheso jets in for concerts

IN MALI they have Salif Keita, South Africa's equivalent is Hugh Masekela, but Zimbabwe's serial hitmaker is none other than Alick "Cheso Power" Macheso.

Macheso is the top-selling musician in the country's irresistible sungura music genre, with his hit albums Zvakanaka Zvakadaro and Mabhawu each selling more than 200000 copies, while more than a million have been sold by music pirates.

Macheso landed at Oliver Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, yesterday before connecting a flight to King Shaka International Airport in Durban, where he is due to perform this evening before 5000-plus fans at Sun Coast Conference Centre, adjacent to the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Macheso will fly back to Johannesburg tomorrow to thrill thousands of revellers at Safari International Hotel.

Oliver Mtukudzi might be Zimbabwe's true superstar, but when it comes to live performances and drawing the crowds, Macheso is in a class of his own. Macheso's promoter, Felistas-Chiedza Chizororo of CC Promotions, said the shows are festive presents for the estimated 3million Zimbabweans in South Africa.
