Underwater tunnel part of London underground

IN 1842 the world's first underwater tunnel was opened in London.

The tunnel was built by Marc Isambard Brunel, who was the inventor of the tunnelling shield used to dig the tunnel.

The tunnel is still used today.

It is part of the East London Line, one of the lines that make up the London Underground rail system. - The Mammoth Book of Great Inventions, Robinson
