Honda to expand airbag recall globally

Japanese carmaker Honda Motor Corp is to expand its recall of cars fitted with defective airbags made by Takata Corp, Honda officials said Tuesday.

The recall will affect around 13 million vehicles, the Kyodo News agency reported.

Honda had already announced the recall of millions of cars in the United States.

A malfunctioning inflater in Takata air bags may cause them to rupture and spray metal fragments.

Lawyers say they have linked the airbags with deaths in the United States and Malaysia.

More than 11 million cars had already been recalled.

Honda has been a customer of Takata for 50 years and is the carmaker most affected.

Toyota, General Motors, Chrysler, Ford and BMW have all recalled vehicles.
