Alcohol advertising ban will cost 12000 jobs: report

A ban on alcohol advertising will result in a loss of 12,000 jobs, The Times newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The ban would also result in an almost R1.8 billion loss in tax revenue.

Research by Econometrix revealed that sports teams, charities, and the arts would lose sponsorships totalling R322 million a year, The Times reported.

However, the ban would make little difference in the fight against alcohol abuse.

Econometrix senior economist Rob Jeffrey told the newspaper that his research revealed that there was no statistical relationship in South Africa linking advertising spending and alcohol consumption.

Jeffrey said the proposed ban on alcohol advertising would have a "severe negative effect on the economy".

A new draft of last year's Control of the Marketing of Alcoholic Beverages Bill was making its was through the country's legislative system.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has been vocal in opposing alcohol advertising.
