Two men arrested for Marikana murder

Two men linked to the “assassination” of NUM branch secretary Daluvuyo Bongo have been arrested at Lonmin’s platinum mine in Marikana, Rustenburg

A 35-year-old man was arrested at Rowland shaft Number Four, and a 37-year-old was arrested at Four Belt shaft, said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

“The men were arrested whilst they were on duty. They are both residents of Wonderkop informal settlement,” he said.

Bongo, 41, was shot dead in his a room at Wonderkop Hostel, in Marikana.

The men were expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

At the time of Bongo’s death, National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) spokesman Lesiba Seshoka called the attack an “assassination”.

He said five NUM members — two of them shop-stewards — were killed in violence associated with a strike at the Lonmin mine in Marikana between August 10 and August 16.

Of the 34 people shot dead by police trying to disperse a group of protesters on August 16, 14 were NUM members, he said.

On September 11, a third NUM shop steward was found dead near the scene of this shooting. Dumisani Mthinti had been hacked to death.

Striking workers at Marikana — and other mines — have voiced unhappiness with their NUM representatives.
