Ncwana buys Vodacom team, launches it in CT

HUNDREDS of dignitaries, including Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula, attended the launch of the new Cape Town All Stars football club in Khayelitsha.

The club is owned by businessman and ANC bigwig Lunga Ncwana, who bought the club from Mr Price in Parkhurst. The team plays in the Vodacom league.

"We have invested a lot of money in this effort and want it to succeed," he said.

Mbalula hailed Ncwana for being a visionary and urged other businesspeople to follow suit.

"He grew up here and today you are seeing the fruits of your own son's labour," Mbalula told the crowd.

The minister also warned the SA Football Association not to waste the millions they are about to get from Fifa for hosting the recent World Cup.

"We will be watching every cent. No government officials must get any bonuses because we seconded them to the LOC (local organising committee) - they can't get paid for that," he said to thunderous applause.

According to club spokesperson Ralph Stuurman the side plans to unearth talent from around Cape Town.

"As one of the legacies of the 2010 World Cup, Cape Town All Stars is embarking on a major overhaul of school soccer in the area," Stuurman said.

Two vehicles were presented to the team by Jorge Ferreira of Mvelaserve, the sponsors. The team is currently made up of players from Delft, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Langa, Mfuleni, Mitchell's Plain, Nyanga, Phillipi and from as far as Fish Hoek.
