Bartlett steps into Sammy's shoes

Shaun Bartlett was named as the new coach of the University of Pretoria yesterday in a swift and surprise change of coach just days after the club upset high-flying Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Sammy Troughton has been sacked after just over a year in charge.

"It's a nice challenge but a tough one too," said Bartlett yesterday. "I've had quite a few opportunities in the last few months but this is a club that I believe I can grow with. It gives me a real opportunity."

Bartlett had been disappointed to be dismissed by Golden Arrows after last season's success but had been patiently waiting for the right job to come around. He had guided Arrows back to the top flight after they had been relegated.

He will be thrust straight into the frontline at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Phokeng, where AmaTuks visit Platinum Stars on Sunday (3.30pm).

"I'm going to hit the ground running but luckily I was in the television commentary box analysing Stars' last game against Chiefs last Sunday," he added.

AmaTuks made the unexpected change just a day after another Tshwane coaching switch - Stuart Baxter for Gordon Igesund at neighbours SuperSport United.

Club chief executive Rendani Mulaudzi said in a statement: "Though we are parting with coach Sammy in the middle of the season, we shall always hold him in high esteem for his loyalty and coaching acumen for the many years he was an integral part of our programme."

Troughton said he was shocked to be called into a meeting yesterday and told of his dismissal.

"I want to wish Shaun and Tuks all the best. I started this club 15 years ago down in the Castle League and I will remain their number one fan. We've been through a lot over the years," said the former English first division footballer.
