Limpopo police have failed to arrest a man who they believe is a prime suspect in the murder and burning of his girlfriend three weeks ago.

Ophney Mokgokong's girlfriend Itumeleng Beetha, 24, was found dead and burned beyond recognition at her parents' home in GaMaraba, outside Polokwane, three weeks ago.

Sunday World has been reliably informed that police know where the suspect lives. Instead of coming over to apprehend him, police have called to ask Mokgokong to present himself at the Mashashane police station near Polokwane.

Police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed that police were appealing to Mokgokong to report to the police station to assist with their investigation.

"The suspect who resides at My Darling in the Senwabarwana area fled the scene in a white (Nissan) Tiida...

"The motive for this killing is unknown but domestic violence cannot be ruled out," said Moatshe. Mokgokong, 27, confirmed police informed him he was the main suspect.

"I received a call from a police officer and he told me to come to the station because they want to talk to me about the death of my girlfriend.

"I told him I was working and I would come to the station on Saturday [yesterday] when I'm off. He said I was the main suspect in the case," he said.

Mokgokong, who denied he was responsible for the murder, confirmed he had been in a relationship with Beetha. He said he met her in November 2014 in Polokwane.

"She told me she had no place to stay as she had left [her] home after her mother had married her off to a man 30 years her senior against her will."

Mokgokong further alleged that Beetha asked to move in with him on the same day as she needed a place to stay.

"I agreed and we started dating thereafter. But in July this year I received a call from my mother telling me that Beetha's mother was with her and she wanted to see her daughter.

"I then called Tumelo and told her that her mother was looking for her and told her that she must go back home."

Mokgokong said he learnt of Beetha's death through her sister Maggy, three weeks after she had left his place.

"She said I killed her sister and burnt her," he said.

Maggy told Sunday World two of her neighbours say they saw Mokgokong at the house a few minutes before they discovered her sister lying dead and burnt at her home.

"They went to the house after they heard a lady screaming and upon arrival, they met Ophney at the door and he told them he and my sister just had [some] disagreements. He told them she was bathing because they were going to town," said Maggy.

She said after the neighbours left, they later saw smoke billowing from the house and saw Mokgokong leaving in a hurry.

"They smashed the windows to gain entry and found my sister lying on the floor dead and burnt beyond recognition."

Beetha's family has also reported to the police that a man using the deceased's phone number had been calling and threatening to kill them if they cooperated with the police.
