Santos still looking for a head coach

SANTOS are sifting through a list of CVs as they seek to appoint a new head coach to replace David Notoane for the new National First Division (NFD) season.

The Cape Town club have already confirmed the re- appointment of former Chippa United mentor Farouk Abrahams as goalkeeper and assistant coach, but are yet to finalise his boss.

"We have quite a bit of interest, but we have to make sure that we get the right quality of coach," Santos chief executive Edries Burton told Sowetan.

"There is nothing to say at the moment other than we are going through the interview process and will look to have the new person in place as soon as possible."

Notoane left Santos at the end of the last campaign to become assistant coach at fellow NFD campaigners Royal Eagles, previously Sivutsa Stars, at their new base in Durban.

The former striker had led The People's Team to fifth spot on the NFD log last season - just three points off the promotion play-off position that was eventually filled by city rivals Milano United.

Abrahams, who was also goalkeeper coach for South Africa at the 2002 Fifa World Cup in Japan and South Korea, has worked at Santos before and at Ajax Cape Town and Hellenic.

Meanwhile, Santos learned yesterday that they would face FC Cape Town in their opening game of the new NFD season on the weekend of August 23-24. They will end their campaign with another meeting against a fellow Mother City side, Vasco da Gama.
