Ref robbed Taliwe of title: trainers

TRAINERS Bernie Pailman and Nick Durandt have accused Australian referee Phil Austin of costing Sipho Taliwe the fight against IBO lightweight champion Cino Daud Yordan.

The championship bout took place at Metro City Northbridge, Western Australia, last week. Yordan, from Indonesia, retained the title via a split points decision. Judge Gary Ingraham from Australia voted Taliwe the winner 114-113, while Kriangsak Thonghong from Thailand and Adam Height from Australia scored the bout 117-110 and 116-111 in favour of Yordan.

Pailman and Durandt strongly believe that had Austin docked Yordan a point for two "deliberate" low blows and not "unfairly" deducted a point from Taliwe for holding, their charge would have been crowned the new IBO champion.

"The fact that Sipho lost the fight via a split points decision tells the story. This is a blatant home decision," said Pailman yesterday.

"Sipho had the fight in the bag for nine rounds. Therefore, Yordan cannot win the fight because three rounds are just not enough to surpass nine rounds. Mathematically it just does not make sense."

Pailman said even if you take the point that was deducted from his charge, it was not enough for Yordan to win.

"What would have happened had the referee deducted a point from Yordan for those deliberate low blows?" asked Pailman.

"Let us say the fight was close, based on the judge who scored it 114-113 for Sipho, how then do the other two come with the scores of 117-110 and 116-111 for Yordan? I cannot change the result but I am bleeding.

"I spoke to many people who watched the fight - they all share my sentiments that we were robbed.

"Sipho fought his heart out..."
