Mohale gets his title back

TSHEPANG "The Gentleman" Mohale has been reinstated as SA's light-heavyweight champion, Boxing SA's director of operations Loyiso Mtya announced yesterday.

Mohale is one of three champions stripped of their titles last month because they failed to renew their licences before March 31, the others being heavyweight Wiseman Dlomo and junior-bantamweight Miniyakhe Sityatha.

Mtya said that deadline was set by the South African Boxing Act 11 of 2001.

Boxing SA had given the trio extensions, but they did not respond, and the governing body was left with no option but to relieve them of their titles.

Said Mtya: "Trainer Warren Hulley gave Boxing SA all the reasons which made it impossible for Mohale to meet our deadline and even the extension. Basically, Warren apologised on behalf of his boxer.

"Boxing SA understood Warren's plea and the decision was made that Mohale be reinstated, but with a penalty of 10% of his purse money when he makes his defence."

For his part, the soft-spoken fighter said: "I'm humbled. I wouldn't have appealed if I did not value the South African title.

"This is my pride."

Mohale won the belt from Johnny Muller on June 4 2011.
