Polokwane on Afcon mission

THE Polokwane municipality is pulling out all stops to ensure that the popular Limpopo city becomes one of host cities for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The other five cities are Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Rustenburg and Nelspruit, who were all hosts during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Polokwane mayor Freddy Greaver said: "We are bidding to host the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finals. We are always looking at bringing high-profile international soccer matches to Polokwane following the success of the 2010 World Cup.

"Our team is working on the project and is in constant discussions with the South African Football Association. We are confident we will win the bid. We are working hard to make sure the Peter Mokaba Stadium does not become a white elephant."

The cities tipped to win the bids are Johannesburg, Durban and Polokwane or Rustenburg.
