Unique 2010 World Cup work of art up for sale

A MPUMALANGA man has arguably made history by becoming the only local artist so far who is known to have immortalised - on canvas - the hosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup that was held in South Africa.

Sicelo Dlamini, 24, of KaMhluswa in Nkomazi, has had his unique and highly prized painting autographed by seven prominent soccer leaders, including Fifa president Sepp Blatter, snf its general secretary Jerôme Valcke.

The painting, which was also signed by Safa vice-president Mwelo Nonkonyane, Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza, Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza, depicts a historic handshake between Blatter and President Jacob Zuma.

It also depicts Mbombela Stadium, which was identified as the best stadium with national heritage features.

After two weeks of working on the oil painting on canvas, Dlamini had a rare encounter with the seven signatories on May 29 2010 when they converged at the Mbombela Stadium for the official handover.

"I was assisted by Mbombela's Differ Mogale to meet them and show them my painting. Their reaction was ecstatic and they duly signed it," he said.

"I felt great, indeed. It was then I felt this piece of art is a heritage piece for the World Cup."

Born in KaMhlushwa, Dlamini matriculated at Sidlamafa Secondary School and studied fine art at Codeck College in Swaziland. He won a creativity award in 2004 during the Mpumalanga Tourism Launch and a gold award from the Department of Education in 2007.

He still works in his makeshift studio at home and has dreams of establishing a training trust for fine artists in Mpumalanga.

His business partner, Amos Mdluli, assists him with publicity by exhibiting his works at Matopo Lodge in Nelspruit.

Bidders for this unique piece of art can contact Dlamini on 076-586-9440 or Mdluli on 082-344-7585.
