Player's charity raises R12m

GARY Player received the best 75th birthday present he could have hoped for when he teamed up with Coca-Cola to raise R12,2million for Chinese Aids orphans at the recent Gary Player Invitational in China.

The Grand Slam winner was left speechless by the generosity of the invited professional golfers, celebrities and businessmen who made this one of the most successful tournaments in the history of this global charity series, which also travels to Europe, America and South Africa to raise funds for underprivileged children. The South African event takes place at The Links at Fancourt from November 18 to 21.

"Raising money for charity is difficult in the current economic times, but this is an unbelievable milestone for us," said Player, who contributed R773000 to the Gala Dinner Auction for a trip for two from Hong Kong to Europe.

Another highlight of the auction was the winning bid of R979000 for an hour-long lesson with celebrated Chinese concert pianist Lang Lang, who also performed at the dinner.
