Fining Cubana is reactive, punish all liquor offenders

The decision of the Gauteng Liquor Board to fine the Cubana where former deputy minister Mduduzi Manana assaulted a woman is a good gesture but reactive in nature.

It is not a secret that many people trade with alcohol illegally but the relevant authorities are not doing enough to reprimand such behaviour.

There are many liquor traders, legal or not, who do not adhere to the rules of the Liquor Board.

There are no or little consequences for those breaking the law.

We cannot afford to have lawlessness in our society, someone should account.

And as for Manana, the PAC is happy with how his case has been handled by the judiciary despite the South African Police Service having attempted to give him unnecessary VIP treatment.

We are confident that the state, through the National Prosecuting Authority, will do its best to ensure that the violent and short-tempered Manana receives a maximum sentence.

This should lead to him being assisted to be rehabilitated fully by the Department of Correctional Services.
