Actors' pickle

THE mother of all weapons, the march and picket, has spilled over into the arts world.

Actors and actresses are protesting against M-Net for making them sign work contracts that will mean the butter will remain with the bosses.

M-Net has refused to share royalties, which means the actors forfeit future earnings.

People in the arts have often asked the government to enact laws to safeguard their talents from exploitation. While wary of regulating the free spirits of the art world, we feel there should be rules that both sides must adhere to. The actors cannot sustain their boycott because jobs are scarce in SA.

This means we will always have to bury our artists out of the public purse.
