Pope's skull cap sold for 89,000 euros at online charity auction

One of Pope Francis' trademark white skull caps was sold for just over 89,000 euros (113,700 dollars) on eBay late on Wednesday, as part of a stunt by an Italian TV show to raise money for a Catholic charity in Africa.

In June, Francis donated the garment to a man who stood in the crowd in St Peter's Square. He took it to Iene, an entertainment show broadcast by the Mediaset network of former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Offered on eBay for a starting price of 1 euro, it attracted a final bid of 89,050 euros. Iene said the funds would go to Soleterre, a non-governmental organization run by a missionary nun helping women give birth in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
