Two arrested after Singapore woman narrowly missed by flying sofa

Two men were arrested in Singapore after a sofa thrown from a fourth-story flat almost struck a passer-by, a news report said Thursday, in the latest of a series of incidents involving discarded rubbish.

The woman in her 40s was walking by the building on New Year's Eve when a two-seater sofa landed in front of her, Chinese newspaper Shin Min Daily reported. She then called the police.

Police questioned three men, of whom two were arrested. The men claimed they had dropped the sofa while moving it for a friend, the Straits Times reported.

The arrests come after a series of incidents in the high-rise city state involving ejected rubbish.

On December 26, a man was arrested for throwing items from the seventh floor of his apartment block, including buckets, an air cooler, a glass tank and a microwave oven.

Separately, two young brothers aged 10 and 11 allegedly threw a small speaker and a vehicle battery from their flat.

Also in December a passer-by was injured after a 15-year-old boy allegedly threw a brick out of the building where he lived.
