Father suspected of killing his four children in Germany

German officials said they had found the bodies of four children aged five to 12 years whom they suspect were killed by their father before he tried to commit suicide.

Prosecutors in the northern state of Lower Saxony said a 36-year-old man was suspected of having killed the four youngsters -- aged five, seven, nine and 12 -- in Ilsede on Thursday evening.

They said that afterwards the man suffered serious injuries "presumably" from trying to commit suicide.

"The accused is currently seriously injured in a hospital," the prosecutor in Hildesheim said in a written statement.

He had left a suicide note, it said adding that "marital problems" were thought to have been the motive.

"The children's mother was not in Germany at the time of the offence," it said.

Prosecutors have opened a murder inquiry and ordered an autopsy of the bodies.
