One person was injured and three taxis came under fire in an apparent drive-by shooting as taxi strikes broke out in Durban on Thursday morning.

Protesters blockaded roads with burning tyres and other debris.

This comes a day after scuffles broke out between rival associations in Umgeni Road‚ in the Durban CBD.

The exact reason for Thursday’s strike is unclear‚ although Wednesday’s protest was over route disputes. Whether the two protests are linked is still to be confirmed.

Police confirmed that‚ shortly after 6am‚ protesters took to North Coast Road‚ near the Connaught Bridge in the Springfield Park area.

“One person injured‚ taken away privately for treatment and three taxis damaged in drive-by shooting‚” a dispatch from police at 7.30am said.

The protests had largely been brought under control by 8am‚ metro police said‚ although officers remained on scene.
