A Crime Intelligence warrant officer will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after his arrest for allegedly demanding money from an informant.

The Hawks’ Anti-Corruption Unit said it had‚ “in conjunction with Crime Intelligence from Head Office”‚ the 39-year-old for corruption and extortion at Crime Intelligence offices in Bloemfontein on Tuesday afternoon.

A statement said: “In March this year‚ the officer remunerated the informer with R9 000 but later demanded R5 500‚ telling the recipient that the money was for another informer who was detained at Grootvlei Correctional Services.

“The informer reported the matter to the Hawks for investigation. During the investigation‚ it was discovered that indeed the officer extorted money from the informer on many occasions.”
