Family and friends of Brenda Lynn Scriven gathered in Durban as rescuers searched for the 62-year-old woman who went missing during floods that have claimed at least one life in KwaZulu-Natal.

Scriven disappeared at around 6pm on Monday. Her car was found at the bottom of Glen Anil Street in Glen Anil on a flooded road. She last made telephonic contact at 6pm and has not been heard from since.

Private security company Reaction Unit SA’s director Prem Balram said the woman’s daughter contacted him with information that suggested she had been washed away from the road into a valley during torrential rains.

“Apparently there is CCTV footage that shows that she was washed away with the heavy rain in this area. I have dispatched a team to search the area and a helicopter will join the search as well‚” he said.

“Her phone‚ handbag and other personal belongings have been found‚” Balram added.

At least one person has died in the province as a result of flooding in Durban‚ the cooperative governance department said on Tuesday.

Details could not be released until the next of kin were notified‚ said department spokesman Lennox Mabaso.

Dozens of homes have been destroyed‚ residents displaced‚ roads flooded and houses damaged.

“The worst-hit areas of KwaZulu-Natal‚ so far‚ include Port Shepstone’s Bhoboyi and uMdoni areas‚ where emergency accommodation is being provided for a community whose homes have been submerged‚” said Mabaso.

“Many parts of Durban‚ including Amanzimtoti‚ Inanda‚ Ntuzuma‚ KwaMashu‚ uMlazi‚ Yellowwood Park and the entire CBD has been flooded.”

He added that emergency teams worked through the night to evacuate residents whose homes were at risk of flooding.

“We would like to reassure the public that our disaster management teams are on high alert and we are already responding to every reported emergency situation‚” said Mabaso.
