SA will not hesitate to act against xenophobia: Gigaba

South Africa remains steadfast about hosting and protecting refugees‚ and will not hesitate to act in favour of refugees when xenophobia raised its ugly head‚ Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba said on Monday.

Giigaba‚ who was addressing a World Refugee Day event in Johannesburg‚ said that in many instances xenophobia also reflects a lack of political leadership.

Events are taking place around the world to pay tribute to people who have been forcefully removed from their homes.

“It is important we raise attention about the plight of refugees. It is for that reason that department‚ in terms of new policy framework‚ will pay greater attention to positive effect of international migration.

“We remain steadfast to host and protect refugees. In opposing xenophobia and making a commitment that wherever it raises its ugly head‚ our government will not hesitate to act in favour of the refugees‚” Gigaba said.

Gigaba said a majority South Africans were supportive of refugees.

“We should not fall into trap of blaming refugees for existing problems.”

Gigaba said South Africa would always rise to the occasion in supporting Africans and others in distress.

“We remain committed to playing our part in furthering ideals of peace‚ of stability‚ of justice so that nobody should continue to be forced to migrate forcibly so that those who decide to emigrate from their countries do out of choice‚” Gigaba said. — TMG Digital
