Tutu laments SA’s journey from TRC to Nkandla

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu says the country’s democratically elected government had let citizens down when it came to dealing with some of the legacies of apartheid.

Tutu was speaking to Eyewitness News in a special podcast series on reconciliation featuring former commissioners of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The millions spent on Nkandla could not be justified‚ he said‚ when asked how government had dealt with some of the legacies of apartheid.

“I think they let themselves down. They let us down. They let those people who came to testify before the commission down‚” said Tutu.

“It’s in fact got worse because when you think of Nkandla. How could anybody who had lived through apartheid and lived through all of that discrimination have been able to accept that they would agree for … so much money spent on a building for one person‚ even when that person is the president?” he asked.
