The SABC has been left fuming after a fake Twitter account using the name of the company’s COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng continues to wreak havoc online.

Messages posted to the account went viral after it responded to a question of whether the SABC would be airing the upcoming EFF Manifesto launch. The fake account replied saying it would be playing a re-run of Sarafina instead.

The account has labelled itself a parody account but that hasn’t stopped the SABC from wanting to find and prosecute the people responsible for the page.

“We know that the account is a fake because Mr Motsoeneng doesn’t have a Twitter account‚” SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago told TMG Entertainment on Friday. “It’s a very serious issue which affects Mr Motsoeneng personally and by implication the SABC.

“Especially if you look at what it was saying recently about us not going to do the EFF manifesto and instead showing Sarafina. It’s disrespectful and we will take the people who are responsible for the account to task.”

Kaizer says that the SABC has set up an internal investigation team to look into the account.

“This could have financial implications for us and even though social media is beyond our power‚ we will have to speak to Twitter to see if we can find the culprit. When we find them we will deal with them as harshly as possible and will have to take legal action.”
