Two SABC crew robbers plead guilty

The criminals that robbed the SABC crew on live television with a toy gun last year are facing jail time after pleading guilty.

Zimbabwean nationals Alfred Ndlovu and Clement Ncube‚ two of the four men accused of robbing SABC journalists‚ pleaded guilty to robbery with aggravated circumstances in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The other two accused of the same crime‚ Pascal Manuel Junior and Motin Mortin‚ also foreign nationals‚ pleaded not guilty.

According to statements submitted by Ndlovu and Ncube‚ they and a man only known as Sirprince robbed journalists at gun-point (with a toy gun) in March last year‚ and took cellphones‚ a laptop‚ a wristwatch and cash. The crew were Sophie Letsaba‚ Vuyo Mvoko‚ Tlhapane Monaisa‚ Tsakani Malwandla and Chriselda Lewis.

After the robbery‚ the three men took the stolen items to Junior‚ who acted as a middle man between them and Mortin‚ the statement said.

Ndlovu‚ Ncube said they and Sirprince pocketed R7 500 after paying Junior R500 for his work.

The robbery took place outside Milpark Hospital in Parktown‚ Johannesburg.

The two said they were aware that their actions were unlawful when they committed the crime.

Prosecutor Shane O’Connell‚ during judgment‚ asked the court to treat the toy gun used in the robbery as a real gun.

“The complainants perceived the threat as coming from a real gun‚ so I ask the court to hand down judgement accordingly‚” said O’Connell.

Magistrate André Petersen found the two guilty of robbery with aggravated circumstances.

O’Connell applied for separate trials for Junior and Mortin from that of Ndlovu and Ncube‚ which was granted.

The matter of Ndlovu and Ncube was postponed to April 21 for a pre-sentencing report. The state said it also needed a probation officer to prove Ncube’s previous conviction of robbery.

The case of Junior and Mortin was postponed to March 9.
