Lucky escape for commuters as bus catches fire

Twenty-five people had a lucky escape after the the bus they were travelling on caught fire on the Higginson Highway late on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened on the M1 near the Bayview off-ramp in Chatsworth.

Dark smoke clouds billowed into the air as KwaZulu-Natal emergency services responded to the scene and found that all 25 passengers had escaped from the bus that went up in flames.

No serious injuries were reported, but three people were treated for minor injuries with one passenger transported to hospital.

All services were called to attend to the scene to help extinguish the flames as well as to keep passing motorists from harm. It is not yet known what caused the bus to catch fire.

One Twitter user managed to catch a video clip of the burning bus while others took pictures capturing the flames.
