Speedster arrested after clocking 158km/h, killing motorist

A man has been arrested after clocking 158km/h and killing a fellow motorist.

The 21-year-old man was trying to flee from traffic officers, before crashing into two other vehicles.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department said the man was driving at high speed in a red BMW 420i on the N3 southbound between the Grey Avenue and Heidelberg turnoffs when he disregarded an instruction to stop from traffic officers.

While attempting to flee, the man lost control of his vehicle and hit a Toyota Corolla, killing its driver. He then also hit an Ekuruhuleni Metro Police Department vehicle that was standing in the emergency lane.

According to police, the driver of the Corolla was declared dead at the scene, while the officer suffered serious whiplash.

"The BMW driver was arrested and charged for failing to stop at the instruction of a metro police officer, culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving," they said in a statement.

The offender was fined R2 000 for clocking 158km/h in a 120km/h zone.

He was expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 4. The cases were registered at the Alberton police station.
