Opposition wants access to record of decision to drop Jiba charges

The official opposition will on Tuesday file an application in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act to get access to the record of decision to “determine the rationality” of dropping the charges against deputy national director of public prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba.

“This decision is questionable given the slew of prima facie evidence against her and her destructive track record at the National Prosecuting Authority‚ Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Glynnis Breytenbach said in a statement.

National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams announced on Tuesday that charges against Jiba‚ whose trial was due to start on Wednesday‚ would be withdrawn as there were no prospects of successful prosecution.

He told reporters in Pretoria that the decision not to continue with Jiba’s prosecution was not taken by him but by Adv Marshall Mokgatle‚ the regional head of the specialised commercial crimes court unit.
