Eastern Cape policeman arrested for murder of colleague

An Eastern Cape policeman will appear in court on Monday charged with shooting dead a colleague and wounding another last week.

The three policemen were all off duty when the incident happened.

It is alleged that a 42-year-old constable‚ who is attached to the Sterkspruit police near King William’s Town‚ assaulted a colleague after they became involved in an argument at their place of residence. When a second colleague intervened and tried to stop the fight‚ the constable allegedly took out his firearm and shot him dead before wounding the other policeman.

The wounded policeman was taken to hospital but has subsequently been discharged‚ according to Eastern Cape police.

A case of murder and attempted murder had been opened and was currently under investigation by the Independent Police Investigation Directory (IPID)‚ they said.

The suspect will appear in the Sterkspruit Magistrate’s Court.
