‘Soweto residents willing to pay but R4bn must be explained’

African National Congress members from across the Johanneburg region who were bussed to Soweto joined a few residents from the township in a march to protest about Eskom’s regular power cuts and lack of consultation when pre-paid meters systems were installed.

Local residents from Orlando‚ who held protests last week‚ stood and watched as the bussed people from outside the township gathered in an open area to prepare to march to the Eskom centre in Diepkloof on Thursday.

Regional general secretary of the SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) Artwell Kamani said Eskom owed Soweto residents an apology for power cuts that lasted for ten hours last week.

He also accused Eskom of disrespecting residents after pre-paid meters were installed without proper consultation.

“Eskom must consult residents and explain to them the purpose of these meter system‚” he said.

Kamani denied that residents were not willing to pay for services including electricity.

He said Sanco would propose that a committee should be established to investigate claims that residents of Soweto owed the power utility close to R4-billion.

“Residents are willing to pay but the R4-billion must be explained‚” he said.
