SLAIN Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa's wife Mandisa Mkhize and government officials are expected to address the community during a crime awareness walk today in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni.

The walk will start at Chris Hani Mall at 8am and end at Vosloorus Civic Centre.

The founder of Onkabetse Care Centre, Mpho Mazamane, said this stems from the high rate of killings in Ekurhuleni.

"There is a high rate of crime in the area. Especially after Senzo's death, people now associate Vosloorus with crime. Therefore, we want to restore the dignity in this area," said Mazamane.

Meyiwa was killed at Kelly Khumalo's home in Vosloorus last October. When approached for comment, Mkhize said: "I live by the words of Psalm 147: 3, "He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds.

"My husband did not belong only to me but to South Africa, and for him to be honoured in this regard brings joy to my heart. I know I'm not alone in missing him, and that gives me great strength to face each day.

"I only wish that his children were old enough to understand how beautiful this moment is. But they will be told of the hero their father was."

Mkhize added: "To lose the one you relied on for so long can be utterly devastating, even worse when it's through crime.

"Crime is a prominent issue that really needs our utmost attention as a country. With that said, I understand it cannot be solved over night ..."

Limpho Hani, widow of Chris Hani, is expected to join the walk. Hani, who was the SACP general-secretary, was shot dead in the driveway of his house in neighbouring Dawn Park in 1993.
