Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe was on his way to Canada for a working visit, the presidency said in a statement on Sunday.

He would be in Canada until Wednesday.

"The purpose of the visit is to promote investment by Canadian companies in South Africa's mining sector," said the presidency.

He was expected to meet with stakeholders from mining companies, investors and bankers.

"He will also hold meetings with the Canada-South Africa Chamber of Commerce and the Toronto Stock Exchange," said the presidency.

Motlanthe was joined by Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant and Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources Godfery Oliphant.
