Woman turned away from voting

A woman who was unable to walk because of a hip operation was turned away from a voting station in the Ward Nine by-election in Tlokwe on Wednesday night, the ANC claimed.

The man transporting her was prevented from driving to the door of the Boikhotso Secondary School in Ikageng, Potchefstroom, by the Democratic Alliance and community members supporting an independent candidate, alleged African National Congress Youth League member Mosioa Mamatale.

"A potential voter on crutches, who cannot walk, was turned away. We tried to get the car transporting her inside, but the independent candidate refused," he said.

"We don't know why they refused. She is mentally fine, but just can't walk."

Mamatale said the ANC had asked the Independent Electoral Commission to help the woman but claimed the officials had been too scared.

"They said the situation is too volatile and she should go home."

The DA denied any, and said it was community members who were refusing to let her in.

Community member Godfrey Shoai, who supports the independent candidate, said special votes were held on Tuesday.

"They [the community] wouldn't allow her to enter. We are not even sure if the person is really crippled," he said.

IEC presiding officer Modisaotsile Makodi said it was an allegation and he would not comment.

By 8pm on Wednesday 1136 of the 2456 people registered to vote at the school had cast their ballots.
