How we can all add to Mandela legacy

TUESDAY, August 6, marked the 17th anniversary since Josiah Thugwana became the first black South African to win an Olympic gold medal.

On the same day in 1990, Nelson Mandela signed the Pretoria Minute suspending the armed struggle. We salute this giant who engaged in a nation-building process. Nobody built like Mandela.

It is no wonder, then, that the three pillars of the Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day at the FNB Stadium on August 17 are sacrifice, unity and inspiration.

On that day, the Springboks and Bafana will meet international rivals in honouring and celebrating Mandela's legacy through sport and culture.

One man, one nation, one celebration. We are of Nelson Mandela!

We salute South African sport star of the year Chad le Clos, Cameron van der Berg and Giulio Zorzi, who have returned with three gold medals, one silver and one bronze from the 2013 Fina World Championships in Barcelona.

Indeed, our R2.7-million cash injection for our swimmers at the championships did bear results. We are hopeful as we celebrate these athletes, that corporate South Africa will find it within their hearts to dig deeper into their pockets in future for the success of all our sporting codes.

We raise our flags high for Orlando Pirates in their African safari. A second star is attainable.

We also salute the Sailing SA team that won us two gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals at the Mirror World Championships in Ireland and the Hobie Tiger World Championships in Germany.

Big ups go to the rugby sevens for winning the gold medal at the World Games in Colombia.

We also salute SA Rowing for bringing a gold medal from the World Rowing Championships in Austria.

Again, thank you and good luck in the future to Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu for his rock-solid cruiserweight success against the Eddie Chambers. We believe you have it in you to win a world cruiserweight title in any organisation.

To Peggy de Villiers, thanks for the three medals you brought from the International World Deaf Games.

Salute to all this week's heroes, who have made their mark.

W e invite corporate South Africa to join us as we commit ourselves to contributing our little for the realisation of Mandela's wish, and probably his last - the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital.

The Nelson Mandela Sport and Culture Day tickets are not for giveaways, but are a way to make a personal, yes individual contribution to the hospital.

On August 16, we also invite corporate South Africa to buy a brick for the construction of the hospital at a gala night at the Sandton Convention Centre.
