KZN beneficiaries of Turkey bursary sent home

Three KwaZulu-Natal students who were part of a group that studied education and medicine at Turkish universities have been sent back home, the Witness reported.

According to the paper, two of the students were involved in a drunken brawl and one fell pregnant.

The students were part of a group of 33 who went to study in Turkey after the provincial department partnered with a Turkish NGO, Horizon Educational Trust, to train science and maths teachers in that country.

In all, 31 of the students were pursuing a teaching honours degree.

"It's embarrassing. At the end of two months one child is pregnant," education MEC Senzo Mchunu was quoted as having said.

According to the report, Mchunu promised to conduct pregnancy tests before sending bursary students overseas.
