English should be the only language used in court

A SENIOR judge interviewed for the position of deputy judge president of the Gauteng North High Court has said that Afrikaans should be dumped as a language of record in court.

Judge Cynthia Pretorius, one of three judgesinterviewed for the position to be vacated next month, told the Judicial Services Commission yesterday that English should be the only language used by lawyers in court.

Pretorius's view was shared by the two other judges contesting for the position, Judge Aubrey Ledwaba and Judge Lettie Molopa-Sethosa.
