Joburg City head of transport Moosajee quits

JOHANNESBURG member of the mayoral committee Rehana Moosajee has resigned, a statement from the mayor's office said yesterday.

She was the MMC of transport in the City of Johannesburg.

Spokesman for the mayor's office, Fred Makoko, said her resignation would take effect from March 1.

"Councillor Moosajee cited personal reasons for her resignation," Makoko said.

She was elected to serve as transport MMC in 2006 when the portfolio was introduced.

"Under her leadership the city embarked on establishing Africa's first Bus Rapid Transport System, Reya Vaya, that is environmentally friendly and empowers communities and businesspeople from previously disempowered communities," Makoko said.

"Under her leadership, Johannesburg created a transport system that is a recipient of many awards across the globe, transports approximately one million passengers a month and is operated by among others local taxi drivers and owners."

Mayor Parks Tau thanked Moosajee for serving the city "with diligence and energy".

Christine Walters has been appointed to take over Moosajee's position. Walters previously served as MMC for community development as well as infrastructure and services.
