Male nurse 'did not rape patient'

"I am here to tell the truth, Michael didn't rape her as she alleged. I didn't hold her down as it was claimed."

A DEFENCE witness told the Bloemfontein High Court that a male nurse accused of raping a cancer patient did not do it.

Janet Kgoane said she was in court to defend Michael Moema and tell the court the truth.

"I am here to tell the truth, Michael didn't rape her as she alleged. I didn't hold her down as it was claimed.

"I only bathed the patient. During that time, Moema was next to me when I bathed the patient," she said.

Kgoane denied that she was protecting the accused from being convicted.

"I am not protecting him. I want to tell the court the truth and what happened between those days," she said.

Matron Dipuo Mathobisa said she reported for duty at National Hospital on October 16 2011 and was informed that there was a female patient who had allegedly been raped by a male nurse in ward 21.

"I went to that ward and called Moema and Kgoane and informed them about the allegations. I went to the patient and she told me that a lady was holding her down while a male nurse raped her. She said the female rubbed her back while she was being raped," Mathobisa said.

The patient told her that she had reported the ordeal to a doctor on duty.

"I asked Kgoane and Moema if they had turned the patient to the other side as she was helpless and could not turn herself.

"I wanted to see her reaction when she saw the two. She did not scream or complain when they entered her room," Mathobisa said.

Later the patient's husband telephoned and asked nursing sister Patricia Pieterson to convey a message to his wife.

"The patient told Pieterson that Moema and Kgoane had raped her again.

"I became confused because the two nurses didn't spend more than 15 minutes with her. I was shocked at her allegations and I thought that the patient was confused," she said.

The patient told her husband who then alerted the police. The woman identified Moema after she was shown his picture and failed to identify the female nurse .

She was moved to Medi-Clinic on October 26 where she died a month later. The trial continues. - ntwagaes@sowetan.co.za
