Sassa reinstates gran's pension

AN ELDERLY woman from Hammanskraal, outside Pretoria, is accusing the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) of refusing to pay her more than a R10,000 social grant.

Monica Mpudi, who first applied for her state pension in 2010, said the money had accumulated from August last year.

Mpudi, 65, said her grant was stopped in August when Sassa asked people to re-register.

"I renewed my card but when I went to the pay point the following month they said the money was not ready.

"I go to the pay point every month but I come home empty-handed, while my friends buy food for their children," she said.

"I had to stay in hospital for two months because of stress. Now doctors tell me I have high blood pressure," Mpudi said.

She said officials at the pay point told her the money was in the system but they couldn't pay her without authorisation.

"I have been to Sassa offices many times but they do not authorise payment. I am suffering. The grant gave me dignity.

I was able to do things for myself and help out in the house. Now I have to ask for everything. I can't afford to buy little things like bread," she said.

Sassa's Silumani Buduza said officials would make sure that Mpudi received her grant in January.

"Her grant was reinstated but there were outstanding documents that had to be filed in. Officials will visit her at home today (yesterday) to complete the forms," he said.

"I can't confirm how much she will be back-paid. Our system will determine how much she should be paid."
