The widow also faces charges of fraud and forgery for allegedly altering her husband's will.

CAPE Town acting judge Patrick Maqubela, who was found dead in his apartment in June 2009, had been taking Viagra for about three years prior to his death.

This was revealed yesterday by Johannesburg doctor Sydney Brett, who gave evidence in the trial of Thandi Maqubela and co-accused Vela Mabena for the judge's murder.

The widow also faces charges of fraud and forgery for allegedly altering her husband's will.

Giving evidence via video link, Brett said he had been treating Maqu-bela since 2006.

"I started prescribing (the erectile dysfunction drug) Viagra for the late judge when he first came to visit me in March 2006. He had an erection problem. He asked me to keep it secret," he said.

Although Brett knew about the judge's infidelity, he did not know about his financial difficulties or personal problems. The widow also consulted Brett about her husband's infidelity.

Brett, who conducted a medical exam of the judge a few weeks before his death, said he "would not say he died due to natural causes". He was in good health and fit, Brett said.
