'Wild car chase ensues after robbery'

Two Pretoria security guards who stopped to buy coffee, ended up chasing a gang of robbers and shooting and injuring all four of them

The pair described the gun battle and wild car chase that followed as “like something out of a Hollywood action movie”, reported Beeld newspaper.

Jaco du Toit, 33, a security guard from Monitor Net, and his friend Darron de Lange, 30, stopped at a Sasol garage in Centurion to buy coffee at 7am on Sunday morning.

“Garage employees ran towards us, saying they’d just been robbed by four men in a silver Toyota Avanza,” Du Toit told Beeld newspaper.

The two guards raced off in search of the getaway car, which was spotted on the Old Johannesburg Road.

The robbers drove at 190 km/h while trying to get away, and began firing at the two guards.

A gun battle ensued, during which one of the robbers was shot and wounded, and the Avanza’s left back tyre was shot.

The car spun through the air, about two metres off the ground, and landed in the opposite lane, in front of oncoming traffic.

The robbers who were in the back seat got out and continued shooting at the two guards, who shot both of them.

One of the wounded robbers ran away, and the other three were treated by paramedics.

Police confirmed the incident and said one of the suspects was still at large.
