Old lady and her gardener killed

The murder of a 96-year-old woman and her 55-year-old gardener in her Klerksdorp house has been condemned by North West premier Thandi Modise

“We wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible these gruesome murders,” she said in a statement.

“We call on police to not leave any stone unturned in their investigations to make sure that those responsible for the heartless murders are behind bars.”

On Sunday police spokeswoman Captain Amanda Funani said the bodies of Elizabeth Louw and Gert Marks were discovered in Louw’s house in Wilkopies on Saturday afternoon by her friend.

“It is alleged that both victims were suffocated and strangled.

“The old woman was tied with shoe laces on her feet and arms before she was killed,” Funani said in a statement.

“The perpetrators fled the scene with the deceased’s jewellery and an undisclosed amount of money.”

Funani said Louw’s sister became suspicious when she did not answer or return her calls.

No one was arrested and investigations were continuing, Funani said.

Modise sent condolences to the families and urged to the community to assist the police in their investigations.

“There is no place in our society for heartless criminals who target the aged and vulnerable in the safety of their homes,” Modise said.
