THE mother of South African middle-distance and world champion runner Caster Semenya, Dorcas Semenya, will see her daughter compete on the track for the first time.
Caster is among the South African group of athletes who will compete at the London Olympics taking place from July 27 to August 12. She will compete in the 800-metre race.
Dorcas, who will be travelling overseas and flying for the first time, said she had not had many opportunities to see Caster compete in her sport.
She said finding out that Caster had made the cut for the Games was one of the most precious moments in her life.
"Since she was first able to walk I have tried to support her. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that this day would come true.
"The Olympics are the peak of her career. Just knowing I can be there is the most incredible gift I could have wished for.
"The only opportunity (I have had to see my daughter performing) has been seeing her on television and reading about her in the papers," an excited Dorcas said.
The dream trip has been sponsored by P&G.
P&G will also host an Africa Day event in London to bring together Africans, so that they can celebrate the moms of the athletes who will be in London during this year's Olympics.
The continental celebration will be graced by high-profile dignitaries from various African countries in a show of unity on foreign soil to support, thank and salute the athletes competing and their moms for all the efforts they have made in their attempts to fly their countries' flags on such a revered world stage.
